God is passionate about the epic adventure being played out on the world’s stage, and it’s our turn to act.
I love stories with a prologue and epilogue—what happened before and what happens later. We’re smack in the middle of God’s story, and He’s already told us the prologue and the epilogue.
The Prologue set the stage for us
We have a definite part to play in what God is doing right now.
The Grand Finale is coming!
If we can get a grasp of what God’s great big agenda is, we can better understand what He has done in the past and where the future is headed. The most amazing part is that He works through us to do what He does!
Imagine a timeline, with creation at the far left and eternity future at the far right:
The Prologue—What Has Gone Before
God created what He desired: a race of beings to be His Image Bearers and Stewards of the Earth.
Adam and Eve rebelled and turned away from their Creator, taking all future sons and daughters down with them. Was God surprised? Of course not! He already had a plan in place.
Moving right along the timeline: The Eternal Word is incarnated as the remedy to bring rebellious sons and daughters back to the Father. Jesus’ life, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension happen, opening the way back into God’s Kingdom.
All of this set the stage for our time, the age of the Church.
This Present Age
God told us what He was up to when He gave the Great Commission.
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18-19)
He is doing two main things: rescuing and training.
1. To baptize is to rescue.
2. To teach them to obey is to train how to live as a Citizen of a new and better Kingdom.
God has chosen to do this great work through us who have already been rescued! Wowzers!
The Grand Finale
This particular span on which we live on the timeline will draw to a close. The time available for us to join in with what God is doing will run out. On the other side of that is an eternal future with Believers united with Jesus and with one another, doing whatever fun things we will do in the Eternal Kingdom of Light. The drama that fills life in this spiritually war-torn world will be over and done. Thank God!
In the meantime, we have work to do and battles to fight! Rescue and training! Onward and upward!
